As the ranks of first generation Palestinian refugees thin and hope of return apears remote, the symbolic value placed on 1948, as the key date in Palestinian history, continues to rise. This period has come to be known as al-Nakba (“the catastrophe”). While many books have been written about the history of the Palestine question, most rely on archival documents rather than the narratives of those who experienced these events.
Since 2002 The Nakba Archive has recorded over 450 eyewitness testimonies with Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon. This unique collection of interviews reconstructs through personal memories the social, cultural and political life in Paletine prior to 1948, and documents the events that led to the expulsion…This archive gives voice to individual histories that have not been formally acknowledged and stands as a public act of witness to the continuing legacy of 1948.
